Default "Watch Yourself" Underated?

I was wondering why more Warriors don't use it...

It makes all casters within range have a Warrior's level of base armor, is highly spammable, and doesn't really cost much attribute points to be effective...

Or am I wrong and it's a total crap skill? >_>

It's definitely not a crap skill. The skill itself is actually very useful, but the problem lies in the fact that it can't always be used in a build.

Putting it on a warrior is a waste because warriors are often at the front of the lines while your soft targets are at the back and out of range of watch yourself. Having your warrior retreat back to your back lines, or having your back line move forward everytime watch yourself is being used, is impractical and possibly dangerous.

Putting it on a caster is often not feasible because most caster classes are better off with mesmer secondary for energy management/enchantment stripping/interrupts/interrupt prevention. About the only time I'd use this skill is if I'm running a ViM monk and have an extra slot that needs filling.

I think my warrior has been shouting Watch Yourself for a good 1200 hours...

It probably doesn't see as much use as it may have once since Dolyak Signet got that very nice boost making it a far superior tanking tool. However, consider that there is no way to stop it outside of... uh, not much. The fact being that you can pump your warrior's AL but 20 before the enemies even start to get away their high damage dealing skills off makes it hard to pass up IMO. Given that, as you said, it is spammable.

Not a bad skill for all you bow weilding R/Ws out there. You don't even need high tactics, as you won't have any other adrenal skills.

When I first started Rood, as a minion N/W, this thing was in my skill bar from the moment I got it. Mark of Pain on our target, attack a few times, "Watch Yourself!" to boost the minion armor.. rinse, repeat.

An idea I had just now for the back-like caster protection would be giving a /W a bow (physical attack, builds adrenaline, right?) and gain a few hits with that, occasionally ping something to keep the adrenaline up, and then hit it if you see melee coming at you. Again, N/W might be good, or Me/W, if maybe you're down on energy (or just hexed and don't want to take Backfire damage) and have some seconds to kill.

So.. yeah. If you're up front with a bunch of melee, or fighting in -very- close quarters, or are a tempting target for an Elementalist's AOE.. I can see this. It's not about you, it's about your allies.

A pretty good skill for PvE IMO.

I agree that it's not very useful for helping out backline team members, but I would argue that that isn't really its purpose anyway.

It's used for helping you, and your fellow tanks up in the front line, tank more effectively.
+20 armor is certainly nothing to laugh at, and you can easily and cheaply spam the living hell out of it so that the +20 armor is up non-stop throughout the entire battle.
In fact, the cost is so low, that I have no problem keeping it up constantly while still having plenty of adrenaline left to run two adrenaline charged attack skills (cyclone axe helps this, of course)

My point is that this is an outstanding tanking skill, along with Dolyak Signet for the really sticky situations.
My tank never leaves home without it.

EDIT: BTW, I'm a strength warrior. That's right, a strength warrior.
You get the +20 armor from this skill at all levels. Increasing your tactics level only increases the duration.
But the range is so small (5 seconds at level 1, 10 seconds at level 12), that a reasonable low-cost threshold can be found for strength warriors. That threshold is 4 tactics (7 seconds).
With my strength W/Mo build (13 axe, 10 strength, 9 healing; all minor runes except vigor and absorption), I have exactly 7 attribute points left over. I use those left-over points to bump tactics up to 4 (6 points gets you to level 3, and a minor rune gets you to level 4).

With the help of my good friend cyclone axe, a 7 second duration is all I need to keep "Watch Yourself" up constantly while still having enough adrenaline left to run two other adrenaline charged attack skills.

The fact is that watchyourself is +20 armor for yourself , where u have 80 or 85 makes your armor 105 or 100 , 60 armor means 100% dmg so +40 armor to a 100 will redice the dmg bye 1/2 , this is why watchyourself is awsome , a 100 dmg fireball will do 50 insted of 75(at 80 armor) like what is that -15 dmg on that attack , emm sheilding hands is just the same but costs energy and has a down time where u can keep watchyourself going as long as u keep fighting. its a very very good skill.

Don't forget the 16 AL from your shield.

You'll get 40+AL at lvl 8 and add that to Watch Yourself...you wont be needing heals for awhile.
